In the fall of 2011 we went into the Tank Studio to record a set of new songs for a local radio show. The songs aired on Exposure on WRUV 90.1FM in late November. We were so excited about the performances that the decision was made to turn these tracks into our next album.

After 4 months of diligent mixing and minimal overdubbing we had a batch of 11 new tunes to send out into the world. Of these 11 songs, our trumpet/drum machine guru Will Andrews is responsible for writing 10 of them. The 11th track is a cover of JDilla penned “Fall in Love” originally released by his group Slum Village.

We are releasing the album ourselves starting at the hometown release party at Nectar’s on Saturday May 26. The album will hit the internet on Tuesday 5/29 (via japhyryder.com and our facebook page) with proper iTunes, Spotify, Amazon release coming in mid June.

A few weeks ago we recorded an episode of Exposure for UVM’s 90.1FM WRUV. The recording was done by local superstar Ben Collette at the Tank Studio in Burlington with help from Brian Jenkins and his crew with 3rd Stone Images. We debuted a batch of fresh material and have plans to make the tracks into a live record to be released later in 2012. Until that comes to pass you can still relive the evening by way of the photo gallery and the official podcast that contains the full 45 minutes of music.

For those of you wondering, the song list is:
Bjork Feathers, Triste, Corleone, Flying Lotus, Set Self Sail v1.0*, El Campéon, Nightwalker, Tribal, Last Night, Right on Time, Bjork Feathers (reprise)**.

*Set Self Sail v1.0 is a return to the original demo version of the last track on our most recent studio record If the Haves are Willing. We like it better.
**the reprise features Zack on Fender Rhodes and Will on guitar.

We took a little time off after our October gigs at Red Square to spend time on other projects and with our families. During this break we recorded an episode of Exposure for WRUV 90.1fm (more info here) and we’ve polished up a fresh batch of songs. Now that our souls (and batteries) are recharged we will be returning to Vermont stages in the early parts of 2012.

January 12 we head back to Red Square for a Thursday night improv session that is our big warm up for Friday January 13 down at the Rusty Nail in Stowe. We haven’t played Stowe in many years and truly look forward to getting back into the mountains. We have our friend DJ Disco Phantom coming down with us to add just a little bit more fire to the party.

After these shows we have another Red Square session lined up for 1/26/12 and a return trip to Sugarbush Ski Resort on 2/25/12. More dates will be added to the calendar as we nail them down, including a few stops out of Vermont (we hope).

While the summer has come and almost gone and the students are arriving back in Burlington by the truckload, it is once again time to let everyone know what we’ve been up to in Japhy Ryder land. It has been a busy summer and looks to be a fantastic winter/fall!

The first and possibly most important piece of news is that the digital release of our newest album If the Haves are Willing is finally scheduled for 10/04/10 with Halogen Records. We released the CD’s ourselves in late June and have been working frantically to get the digital edition ready for the streets. There will be shows celebrating the worldwide digital release, as well as a few other surprises to be announced later this fall.

Over the past few months our guitarist Zack has been feverishly working on the new studio album from his band the Zack Dupont Band. This is the first full band album he has put together that features his silky smooth songwriting. His debut album Paths was released last year to a roar of public praises. For the new record he has been working with producer Jared Slomoff as well as some of the best musicians in Vermont. Look out for this one when it drops!

Speaking of studio work, just this past weekend we had the privilege of returning to The Tank which is our favorite studio here in Burlington with our dear friend and former pianist Jon Goneau. Jon made a special trip up to Burlington for this late night session while back on the east coast. While we still have no idea what will become of the recording from this session, it was fantastic having Jon back with us. More info will be made available as we decide how and when to use these tracks.

While on the topic of Jon Goneau, there are outtakes from the recording of No Consequence that are slowly being mixed/mastered for inclusion in the digital extended edition release tentatively slated for Spring 2011. When the main tracks were done for that album, the beer started flowing and we kept playing. Out of this extra 4-5 hours of improvised goodness we’ll be compiling an EP for exclusive digital release.

The last bit of news for now is a coming remix contest. Within the next month or so we’ll be launching a contest to remix a track from If the Haves are Willing. The best remixes will land themselves on an EP to be released digitally. Other prizes and information will be made available once we’ve finalized the details.

Here are a few of the pictures taken at the Tank with Jon.

Lastly, we have a video shot back in April at Nectar’s. It’s of a song called Heavy and features our buddy Sam from Otis Grove on the organ.
